A campaign URL checklist for cleaner marketing reports
Agree on campaign labels, test the destination and check for personal information before publishing a tagged marketing link.
A campaign link is easier to maintain when the team agrees on its labels before it appears in an email, advertisement or partner placement. Google Analytics supports UTM parameters in destination URLs to identify referring campaigns, with the resulting values available in acquisition reporting. Our recommended starting point is one shared naming sheet that the people publishing links and reading reports can both use.
Agree on the labels
Record the source, medium and campaign consistently. Use the content field when you need to distinguish creative versions or placements. Google documents that parameter values are case-sensitive, so changing capitalization can create a different value. For example, an open-house email could use source community_digest, medium email, campaign autumn_open_house and content text_link.
Test the complete destination
The next check is the destination. As an operating practice, open the complete link, confirm the intended page loads and record the final URL. Check that any existing functional parameters still behave as expected. Put the approved link, campaign owner and placement in the same record so a colleague can reuse the intended version. A well-formed link alone does not verify an analytics installation.
Keep personal information out of campaign links
Keep campaign labels about the campaign. Google's Analytics guidance says not to include personally identifiable information in URLs, page titles or campaign parameters. That includes email addresses and personal phone numbers. A contact's name or email therefore should not become a convenient campaign label. Review generated links as well as manually entered ones, because both can carry information into the page URL.
For web data streams, Analytics also provides configurable data redaction. The feature can remove likely email addresses and specified query parameters before collection, and includes a way to test the configuration. Google describes email detection as best effort and says the feature does not cover data sent through Measurement Protocol or Data Import. Consider it an additional control whose scope needs to be understood.
Close the loop after launch
Before a campaign goes live, assign a person to verify the destination, naming record and expected measurement. After launch, compare incoming campaign labels with that record and investigate unexpected values. This operating routine creates a concrete trail from the approved link to the report the team reviews, without assuming that tagging by itself establishes campaign profitability or measures every customer interaction.
